Last week I attended with Mayor Krog and other Councillors for an important upgrade to our City's water supply. The Midtown Water Supply Project cost nearly $55 million, and was made necessary by the event in April, 2020, which saw a major main burst on Bowen Road and disrupt water to a large section of Nanaimo including the hospital. That infrastructure failure made this project a priority. It will enhance capacity to accomodate future growth, bolster water system resilience, and improve ability to meet increasing water demands. It is also part of broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure, including replacng high-risk concrete pipe currently under Bowen Road. Work on that will begin immediately. Water is our most valuable resource, and maintaining infrastructure is a primary responsibility of City government.
