It was my pleasure last Friday evening to attend the 18th annual Sport Achievement Awards banquet at the Coast Bastion Hotel. Top local athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and teams were honoured for their efforts during 2022, and a large crowd was on hand to help celebrate. Among those honoured were VIU Mariners volleyball MVP Jane Lytvynenko as female team athlete of the year and Nanaimo NightOwls all-star Tim Holyk as male team athlete of the year. A pair of special awards saw Harry and Jessie Whittam named as recipients of the Michael Rhode Memorial for their longtime dedication to sports in Nanaimo, while Brian Cornborough was honoured with the Hero in You Award for his years of service to minor softball.
