Earlier this month the Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon, at which members of the incoming City Council were invited to introduce themselves and identify topics they see as important. Each of us gave a very brief impromptu response. Personally, I always feel that Councillors need to remember that they are honoured to be representing the citizens of our city. We need to do what is best for the city overall, not on personal pet projects. It starts with the principles of good governance, which involves respectful behaviour, understanding our role of oversight, and focussing on issues within our jurisdiction. Having said that, I identified two "concrete" topics I will be interested in: 1. keeping tax increases to a minimum during this year of high cost of living, and 2. examining of committee structure with a view to increasing opportunities for public involvement.
