Issue: Increased Affordable Housing

Many people are not aware that the City has an Affordable Housing Plan, which we must continue to pursue, along with working in partnership with Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society. Affordable housing initiatives to examine include amendments to bylaws for expansion of secondary suites and coach houses, consider pre-zoning land parcels for housing in certain areas, incentivize family-friendly multi-bedroom projects such as the recent Harewood development, and update density bonussing policy. The City is not in the development business, but it can take steps to encourage affordable housing development as per market demand.
