At the January 20, 2025, Council Meeting, a unique honour was bestowed upon a well-known member of our community. John Ruttan, who served as Mayor from 2008-2014, was granted the Freedom of the City, the highest honour the municipality can bestow on a citizen. Aside from representing Nanaimo well as Mayor, Ruttan's community involvement over the years has been amazing, including Nanaimo Port Authority, Tourism Nanaimo, Nanaimo Hospitality Association, Nanaimo Bathtub Society, Rotary Club, and longtime downtown business owner. From my dealings with John, I have always respected him for his professional demeanor, dignity, and class. He is a gentleman, and he has served our city very well indeed. Congratulations John Ruttan on a well-deserved honour.
