From April 14-16, Nanaimo was host city to the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities convention. The annual gathering brings together municipal representatives from communities all over Vancouver Island as well as the Sunshine Coast. Held at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, business sessions of the convention involved voting on resolutions submitted from various areas on positions to be advanced to the provincial government. As well, there were numerous study sessions on such topics as emergency management, regional collaboration, community health issues, and emerging risks to local government. The convention also provided an opportunity to network with elected officials from other jurisdictions, and was an opportunity to showcase our City and Regional District. Next year the convention is scheduled for Victoria, then hopefully back in Nanaimo the following year.
